During those endless days of May rain, when I needed to remind myself that summer was coming and the sun would show its face again, I reached for a glass of Old Pro Gose. The hazy golden liquid, with sharp notes of citrus zest and salty ocean breeze in its aroma and a thirst-quenching salt and sour-lemon tang in the finish, is my favorite thing to drink on a hot summer day. In no time at all, I was sitting on the porch at a beach house — well, mentally, at least.

Baltimore’s Union Craft Brewing won a silver medal for Old Pro at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival, which wasn’t really a surprise: Union brewer and co-founder Kevin Blodger had won a bronze medal in the same category in 2011 when he worked at Rockville’s Gordon Biersch brewpub.

Tart, dry and refreshing: This is a beer to keep in your refrigerator through the dog days and beyond.
