Black Ankle Vineyards Slate

★★1 / 2

Maryland, $45

The Governor’s Cup best-in-show winner for 2011, this blend doesn’t fit any of the classic models. It is a multi-vintage blend, which means it has already aged (the blend is primarily from 2007 and 2008); the grape mix is unconventional, tossing 31 percent syrah into an otherwise Bordeaux-style wine. The result is deep and focused, with nice blueberry and cranberry fruit and a silky, soft texture.

Black Ankle Vineyards Rolling Hills 2009

★★

Maryland, $28

This merlot-based blend offers attractive cocoa, cherry and wood-spice flavors in a pleasant, easy-to-drink wine.

Boordy Vineyards Landmark Series Pinot Grigio 2010

★★

Maryland, $13

Crisp and mineral, with excellent focus, this refreshing white was produced from grapes grown on young vines on Boordy’s replanted vineyard in Baltimore County. This pinot grigio is better than most Italian ones at the same price.

Boordy Vineyards Landmark Series Chardonnay Reserve Long Green Vineyard 2009

Maryland, $20

Stylishly made, this has nice apricot fruit and toasty, creamy oak influence.

Slack Barbera Reserve 2010

Maryland, $28

It’s a Barbera from southern Maryland, with 10 percent petit verdot added to give it extra-deep color and aromas. This is a spicy wine with a hint of acidic “twang,” but it fleshes out nicely with air and is even better the second night. This is a winery to watch.

Knob Hall Dry Rosé 2009

1 / 2

Maryland, $12

Juicy and fun, this pink wine from Chambourcin grapes would make a nice partner to grilled burgers, pizza or sandwiches and is just fine by itself.
