Cameron Hughes Lot 230 Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

★★1 / 2

Chalk Hill, Sonoma County, Calif., $16

It has a gorgeous nose of blackberry and currant, with sexy wood spice and loads of jammy dark-fruit flavors on the palate. A tad hot at first (14.3 percent alcohol), but the fruit takes command and demonstrates what cabernet sauvignon can accomplish in northern Sonoma County.

Monument/RNDC in the District and Maryland; RNDC in Virginia: Available in the District at Bell Wine & Spirits, Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits, D’Vines, Morris Miller Wine & Liquor, Paul’s of Chevy Chase, Potenza Wine, Zola Wine & Kitchen; on the list at various Pizzeria Uno locations. Available in Maryland at Bay Ridge Wine & Spirits and Mills Fine Wine and Spirits in Annapolis, Belby Discount Beer and Wine and Gilly’s Craft Beer & Fine Wine in Rockville, Calvert Wine & Spirits in Hunt Valley, Finewine.com in Gaithersburg, Friendship Wine and Spirits in Abingdon, Highland Wine & Spirits, Iron Bridge Wine in Columbia, Old Farm Liquors in Frederick, Wells Discount Liquors in Baltimore. In Virginia, Sam’s Club locations carry the Lot 140 from 2007, an excellent vintage.

Cameron Hughes Lot 294 2009

★★1 / 2

Savigny-les-Beaune, Burgundy, France, $25

Tight and focused, this is a nice Burgundian style of pinot noir, light in texture and body, yet well structured and seductive.

Online sales only: www.chwine.com.

Cameron Hughes Lot 287 Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

★★1 / 2

Napa Valley, Calif., $20

Made with grapes primarily from the famed Stag’s Leap District, with some from Rutherford and Oakville thrown in, this wine is a reminder of what Napa used to offer before prices became crazy. Buy this one by the case, and take advantage of the free shipping.

Online sales only at www.chwine.com.

Cameron Hughes Lot 266 Pinot Noir 2009

★★

Los Carneros, Calif., $14

This is more accessible in style than the Burgundian to American drinkers familiar with California pinot noir, but it still manages to show restraint. For California pinot noir under $20, this is tough to beat. Bravo.

Cameron Hughes Lot 280 Chardonnay 2009

1 / 2

Arroyo Seco, Monterey County, Calif., $14

Rich and oaky in the old California style, this is one to stock up on if you like your chardonnay to taste like buttered popcorn. A definite throwback in style, and well done in this genre.

Cameron Hughes Collection Chardonnay 2009

1 / 2

California, $13

Largely free of oak influence, it is fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness and crispness. This selection and a meritage Bordeaux blend in the same Cameron Hughes Collection are entry-level wines that demonstrate Hughes’s talent for finding labels that overperform for a negociant level.
