IN SEASON: Fresh apricots may be out of season, but you can still find tasty alternatives in dried form. We recently tried the sun-dried apricots from Traina Foods in Patterson, Calif.
The sweet-tart, tangy, deeply flavored apricot halves come in two- or five-pound bags; eat the plump bites as a snack or use them in sweet or savory recipes. (The apricots pictured are preserved with sulfur dioxide, which helps maintain their color and stop microbial growth, but the company also sells organic dried apricots with no additives or preservatives.)
Other dried fruits available include sun-dried nectarines, peaches, pears, plums and tomatoes.
Sun-dried apricots, 2 pounds, $12.95-$15.95; 5 pounds, $29-$37.75. trainafoods.com.
