SIP IT, OLD-SCHOOL: Meet Vitick’s Switchel, a nonalcoholic vinegar-based drink made in Arlington by Jill Vitick. This slightly tart, ginger-laced beverage, also known as haymaker’s punch, has origins in the Caribbean and roots in Colonial America. Vitick, who uses all locally sourced ingredients (except for a touch of lemon juice in the sorghum switchel), calls the switchel “a natural Gatorade,” citing its restorative qualities.

We tried both the maple and sorghum varieties: The maple is light and smooth, with the ginger kicking in at the end, while the sorghum feels slightly thicker and more tangy. Both are a refreshing and not-too-sweet alternative to kombucha or shrubs. If you’re thinking these would be good paired with whiskey, you’re not the only one: Vitick’s Switchel will soon be sold at Catoctin Creek Distilling Co. in Purcellville, Va.
