A bedroom makeover

Terry and Steve Long think their Bethesda bedroom looks fussy. They want the space to be sunny and less formal. They’re okay with mounting the TV on the wall, and the pink paint has to go.

Editing is key in designer Sharon Kleinman’s approach. By consolidating furniture and emphasizing texture over patterns, she makes the room feel cozy and less cluttered.

Flank the bed with matching chests for added storage.
Low chests are less overwhelming than a tall armoire.

Hang a mirror behind the bed to reflect light from the tall windows.

Layer two curtain panels on top of each other to make them seem fuller. Sew them together with a double stitch.

Paint the curtain rods Linen White to match the doors and trim. The walls are Hawthorne Yellow. Both colors by Benjamin Moore.

Define the seating area with a solid shag rug. This adds texture to the room without making it feel busy.

Hang the TV on the wall above the fireplace and get rid of the large media cabinet to clear floor space.

Paint the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall color. Mix 1 / 4 Hawthorne Yellow and 3 / 4 Linen White.
