The Moore family: Ian, Andrew, 2, Judith and Kamilla, 10 months. (Leah L. Jones/FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE CHALLENGE

Judith and Ian Moore moved into their Lexington Park home six days before the birth of their first child. Three years and a second baby later, their 19-by-19 bedroom remains an eyesore. The Moores (shown with Andrew and Kamilla) dream of it becoming a relaxing retreat.

THE SOLUTION

By devising a soothing color scheme using blues and taupes, designer Mary Douglas Drysdale transformed this bare bedroom into a stylish sanctuary.

Soften the space with neutral drapes. Fabrics such as linen will add cozy texture and let just the right amount of light in.

Layer the lighting. Overhead light can be lackluster and severe. Multiple light sources will add complexity and warmth to a room.

Add splashes of color and pattern with area rugs and throw pillows. These will help tie the color scheme together.

Ceilings need love, too. Spruce up the often neglected area by adding eye-catching fan blades.

A dramatic headboard can help fill larger rooms with daunting wall space. Wing-shaped pieces mix snugness with splendor.

Unexpected curves will make a boxy room more inviting. Round, wheeled endtables are an elegant touch.

Take a color cue from nature. Bring the outdoors in by combining cool and warm tones like sands, taupes, grays and blues.
