House Calls: A bedroom stuck in the ’80s

Julie and J Keller’s bedroom. (Leah L. Jones/For The Washington Post)

Haymarket resident Julie Keller is tired of her husband J’s 1980s bedroom furniture. Both avid readers, Julie and J want storage for books and clothing, along with comfortable seating to take advantage of views out to the backyard trees and pond.

The solution. (Illustration by Julius Goyanko for The Washington Post)

Mother-daughter design pair Danny Christmas and Shannon Woodward create a calm, relaxing space by using rustic accents and nature-themed colors paired with modern finishes, with spacious cabinets and dressers for book and clothing storage. Woodward and Christmas (301-996-4657, are based in Chevy Chase.

Replace the ceiling fan with a rustic metal chandelier to create an interesting, and functional, focal point.

Curtain panels hung from the ceiling add height and warmth.

Floor lamps offer necessary task lighting by the new reading chairs.

Framed agate slices bring an understated outdoor element to the room.

Paint the walls a warm off-white for an updated look. Try Sherwin- Williams’s Antique White.

Choose large dressers for storage, with doors to hide clutter.
