House Calls: A large master bedroom’s revival

University Park resident Linda Verrill’s bedroom could practically be a studio apartment. There’s room for a television, desk, treadmill and more. Verrill and her husband, Brian Shoemaker, want to replace the mismatched furniture they used to fill out the large space, add more storage and lighten up the colors with new accessories.

Designer Elizabeth Krial brightens the room with a spring-inspired color scheme, incorporating yellows, blues and creams into the bedding, art and furniture. Krial, of Elizabeth Krial Design (703-435-6262,, is based in Reston.

Bedding in a fun, light pattern helps revive the homeowners’ existing bed.

Modern pieces, such as a stainless steel desk and floor lamp, are paired with existing wood furniture for an updated feel.

White drapery panels help soften darker, sophisticated Roman shades, both of which provide privacy.

A large media console offers space for books, electronics and more.

Paint the walls a light blue for a soothing, cozy atmosphere. Try Benjamin Moore’s Breath of Fresh Air.
