House Calls: A sleek, modern family room

With no television, Miranda Weeks of Vienna (pictured with Audrey, 10) likes to use her family room to entertain guests before dinner or play games with her family. A set of railings and two sets of doors, however, make furniture placement difficult. The Weekses want a cozier seating arrangement that incorporates existing couches, and new flooring and lighting for an updated look.

The solution. (Julius Goyanko for The Washington Post)

The Perceptions Interiors design team, including J. Allen, Monique Farley ,Andrea Kavanaugh and more, pair swivel chairs and a dining table for a gaming area, with tile flooring that gives the Weekses a neutral foundation to build on with color. Perceptions Interiors (805-441-6193,, are based in the District.

Create a cozy seating area in the center of the room with swivel chairs, which can be turned to face the couches or fireplace.

Replace the mantel with an existing large painting to create a bold focal point.

Light tan floor tiles provide a neutral backdrop for dark couches.

Blue-gray walls add color and pair well with a neutral floor. Try Benjamin Moore’s Pebble Beach.

Nesting console tables offer space to put down drinks and books and can be tucked away to save space when not in use.

Replace the ceiling fan with metal pendant lights for a modern look. Hang several, in different sizes, over the game table.
