THE CHALLENGE

Carole and John Pescatore. (Leah L. Jones/For The Washington Post)

Avid readers Carole and John Pescatore of Ashton want to spend more time enjoying books in their rarely used living room. The couple would like to incorporate colors from a tan, rust and blue quilt hanging outside the room’s entrance, and they’ll need a place to store all those books.

THE SOLUTION

Designer Kelly Porter gives the Pescatores a reading room with a more contemporary look while sticking to their wish list. Porter, of Porter House Designs (410-382-4357, www.porterhousedesigns.com), is based in Baltimore.

The wall color picks up on a blue hue from the Pescatores’ existing quilt. Try Sherwin-Williams’s Gentian.

An ottoman plays many roles, serving as a coffee table, foot rest or extra seating for guests.

New bookcases, illuminated by cabinet lighting, serve as the room’s focal point. Mix in accessories among the books.

Canvas art with a primarily yellow color scheme complements the new blue walls.

New wingback chairs, with high backs and plush upholstery, offer comfortable seating for reading.
