Perfecta Baffer wants to get the most out of the basement of her District home. With young kids and a husband who plays music, Baffer needs space for drums, a sofa and toys — and, if possible, a home office.
Designer Quintece Hill-Mattauszek checked all the boxes on the Baffers’ challenging wish list, while giving the basement a casual elegance.
Hill-Mattauszek, of Studio Q Designs (301-728-2343, www.quintecehill.wix.com/studio-q-designs), is based in Alexandria.
Use the entrance hallway (not shown) for a new desk and floating shelves, which offer additional storage.
The Baffers plan to replace the carpeting with tile. Adding an area rug will help define the seating and play area.
A fabric ottoman is great for families with small kids, with the soft surface providing seating and no sharp corners.
Painting the wood paneling a neutral white, such as Benjamin Moore’s Atrium White, brightens the entire basement.
New window treatments help dress up the room and hide the fact that it’s below ground level.
Storage cabinets from Ikea can be customized to store the Baffers’ toys. The designer suggests using wire pullout baskets.
