While Vicki Moyer’s first floor is under renovation, the Columbia resident and mother of two is dreaming of a new look for her living room, which has turned into a “dumping ground” for backpacks and jackets. The family needs storage, seating and additional lighting.
Designer Suzanne Manlove adds storage to handle the overflow from the entry hallway and a homework nook.Manlove, of Arlington Home Interiors (703-589-8488, www.arlingtonhomeinteriors.com), is based in Arlington.

A bookcase with a combination of open shelving and bins can display family photos and books while hiding clutter.
A faux grasscloth wallpaper on the TV wall gives the room a focal point and added color behind the open bookshelf.
Lidded, woven basket trunks are perfect for an unused corner. The trunks add warmth, style and additional storage.
The Moyers want to keep their existing couch. Simply adding colorful pillows can update the look.
A second seating area with a table and chairs can be used for homework, games or reading.
Soft blue walls provide a calming, neutral backdrop. Try Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue.
