THE CHALLENGE

Sarah Brachman says the office of her Falls Church home has become a dumping ground for the family’s junk. She wants to transform it into a comfortable hangout space for teens and adults. None of the furniture has to stay, but she would like to have some storage space in the redesigned room.

Brachman wants to keep some storage space, but mostly wants a comfortable room for watching TV and playing games.

THE SOLUTION

Designer Christie Leu’s proposed solution for the room. (Julius Goyanko/for The Washington Post)

Designer Christie Leu adds a comfortable sectional and a round coffee table with four ottomans to allow versatile seating for lounging or playing games. A ceiling light on a dimmer and a floor lamp next to the sofa make the room a cozy place to curl up with a book.

Choose a warm paint color, such as Grant Beige by Benjamin Moore , to add depth and make the room more inviting.

Consider placing filing cabinets in the closet, to provide storage without eating into the footprint of the lounging space.

Add height to the room by hanging shades at the ceiling instead of the top of the window.

A fun mural can conceal the bifold closet doors.

Hang two
similar mirrors together
to create a dramatic focal point.

A media console serves double duty as added storage and a home for the television.

Replace the wall-to-wall carpet with an area rug in a bold pattern, to add color and help define the space.
