Bao Bao, the National Zoo’s 7-month-old giant panda cub, went into the yard of the panda exhibit for the first time April 1, 2014. Zookeepers said the cub hesitated at first, but mom Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) encouraged her. Mei kept an eye on the cub as she explored the grass and even tried to climb a tree. By the next day, she was climbing trees and stone walls.
