Class of KidsPost: Keene Mill sixth-graders

Maura Madigan's sixth-grade class at Keane Elementary School in Springfield. (Keane Elementary School)

When Maura Madigan’s 23 sixth-graders at Keene Mill Elementary in Springfield filled out the “Class of KidsPost” questionnaire, they got into what Mrs. Madigan called a “heated discussion/debate” about what the world’s biggest problem is. Read on, if you want to know their opinion on that issue, plus a few other not-so-serious topics, including their favorite authors, games and ice cream flavors. If you’d like to see your class featured, ask your teacher to go to www.kidspost.com to download our questionnaire, fill it out and send it, along with a class picture, to kidspost@washpost.com. We’ll feature one class a month throughout the school year. If your class is chosen, we’ll send you a KidsPost Chesapeake Bay poster and KidsPost pencils.

Favorite author:

All the big names made these kids’ list, including J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan, Suzanne Collins and Jeff Kinney.

Favorite game:

“Temple Run,” “Minecraft” and “Plants vs. Zombies” are high on the list. The fact that all of the games are video, computer or online games helps explain the answer to the next question.

How much time do you spend on the Internet each week?

18 kids said “more than four hours.”

Four said “two to three hours.”

One student said “less than two hours.”

Favorite ice cream flavor:

Chocolate chip cookie dough, mint chocolate chip and Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food top their list. Yum.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

This group’s wide interests are reflected in their dream jobs, which include: doctor, interior designer, fighter pilot, nuclear physicist, park ranger and, our favorite, KidsPost writer!

What’s the biggest problem in the world today?

Hunger, homelessness, government debt, global warming, war and corrupt governments are just a few of the topics this group debated.
