Stubbs, the honorary feline mayor of an Alaska town, has recovered enough from severe wounds received in a dog attack to be released from the animal hospital.

Owner Lauri Stec brought Stubbs home to Talkeetna on Monday. She said Stubbs is doing okay but appears to be in a lot of pain.

Stubbs, who’s 16, lives at Nagley’s General Store, where Stec is the manager. She said that for at least a few days, Stubbs will stay at a house connected to the store. Stec said Stubbs is a social animal, so he will return to the store soon.

Stubbs had been at the hospital after being mauled by a loose dog. The August 31 attack left him with a damaged lung, a broken bone, bruised hips and a deep cut.

The community of 900 elected the cat in a write-in campaign 15 years ago. There is no human mayor in the town, where Stubbs greets customers at the store.

Stubbs was popular before the attack, but now he has fans worldwide. His Facebook page had more than 22,000 likes as of Tuesday.
