Paul Salopek is on a seven-year trek from Ethiopia’s Rift Valley to the Tierra del Fuego islands off the tip of South America. His path is the same one that the first humans took beginning about 60,000 years ago. Along the way, Salopek will write about what he sees and the people he meets.
Explorer Paul Salopek began his 21,000-mile trek from Africa to South America in January. So far he has walked through Ethiopia, ridden a ship across the Red Sea and is now north of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Steven Stankiewicz for The Washington Post
