Like Emily, Ivy is drawn to animals, especially horses. “Ivy Takes Care,” by Rosemary Wells (ages 7 to 10), tells the story of the
fifth-grader, who lives on a Nevada dude ranch in 1949. After her best friend leaves for summer camp, Ivy starts an animal-care business to earn money. When Ivy cares for a horse named Chestnut and an injured fox, the local veterinarian gets her thinking that maybe she could spend her life helping animals.
