Katherine Applegate’s ‘Ivan’ wins Newbery; Jon Klassen’s ‘Hat’ gets the Caldecott

“The One and Only Ivan,” by Katherine Applegate.

The winner of the award for the best book for kids of the year — the Newbery Medal — was written by a gorilla.

Well, not quite. “The One and Only Ivan” was written by Katherine Applegate, but one of the things that makes this book memorable is that it is written from the perspective of Ivan, an enormous silverback gorilla who has lived his life in a cage as part of a circus.

Ivan is an artist and a good friend to Stella the elephant and Bob the dog, but he is also a little unhappy. This book is a KidsPost favorite; regular readers will remember we reviewed it last February. If you didn’t read it then, we encourage you very much to do so. With Ivan’s wisdom about his world and its unique style, it’s unforgettable.

The American Library Association names the Newbery Medal winner and also the Caldecott Medal for the best picture book. This year’s Caldecott winner is “This Is Not My Hat” by Jon Klassen, about a small fish who has stolen a big fish’s hat!
