Who is top dog?

That would be the Labrador retriever, which for the 22nd year in a row was named the nation’s most popular dog by the American Kennel Club.

It seems that bigger is better when it comes to dogs, with four of the top five being larger animals.

This year’s top five:

1. Labrador retriever

2. German shepherd

3. Golden retriever

4. Beagle

5. Bulldog.

“Bigger breeds are making their move. The bulldog has muscled his way into the top five,” said Lisa Peterson of the AKC. The tiny Yorkshire terrier dropped from fifth to sixth place.

Dog popularity changes over time. From 1960 to 1981, the poodle was most popular. then the Cocker spaniel held the top spot until the Lab took over. (The poodle now ranks 8 and Cockers are 27.)

The list of most popular dogs came out before this week’s Westminster Kennel Club dog show, the nation’s most famous dog competition.

Two new breeds, the Russell terrier and the treeing Walker coonhound, will compete this year.
