Three area middle-schoolers were recognized along with peers from across the country on Monday for their volunteer activities.

Ally Salvino of Germantown, Tomas Nichols of Stafford and Maxine Bailey of Washington earned the Prudential Spirit of Community Award as the middle school honorees from their states and the District.

Tomas, a Poole Middle School sixth-grader, has organized a team to participate in a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fundraising walk since 2008. He has raised $55,000 to help fight cancer.

Maxine and a friend set up a nonprofit organization to raise money for Red Cross relief efforts. The Holy Trinity School eighth-grader raised more than $2,000 for earthquake relief in Haiti.

Ally has worked with kids with special needs at Kingsview Middle School, where she is an eighth-grader, and at her elementary school and a local camp.

A high school and middle school honoree from each state won $1,000 and a trip to Washington. Ten national honorees won $5,000.
