About the daters ...

Fitness routine . . .

Rocky: Went to college on a soccer scholarship and still work out three to four times a week.

Bryann: I used to play soccer in college, and I play in a club league now, so I try to stay in good shape.

Happiest when . . .

Rocky: Around people that like to laugh, playing soccer, eating/drinking with friends.

Bryann: I’m at the lake fishing or sitting on a beach with a cold beer.

Your type

Rocky: I like a girl that is in shape, has a nice face and is fun. I’m not very tall and prefer a shorter girl, but it isn’t a huge deal. I’m 5-7, and my last girlfriend was 5-8, and it didn’t bother me that much; I just felt like a rapper with some nice eye candy. But 5-5 or lower would be nice.

Bryann: I like people who are athletic and can keep up with me. They don’t have to be too tall, but they definitely need to be taller than me.

Interests to share . . .

Rocky: I love vacations, the beach and tropical weather. I love going out and having fun, and I also really like staying in and watching a movie. I love sports, and I also think it’s important to have a good relationship with your family.

Bryann: Someone who likes to go camping, hunting and fishing but doesn’t mind staying in on a weekend night sometimes just to watch a movie.

The date(s)

Editor’s Note: A D.C. United game seemed like the perfect blind-date venue for these two soccer buffs, so we hooked them up with sweet seats and access to the catered VIP tent.

8 p.m., D.C. United vs. New York Red Bulls soccer game, RFK Stadium

Bryann: The ushers didn’t really understand where we were supposed to be. We were both told to go to two different areas.

Rocky: She was on the other side of the field at the tents, and I was where the seats were, so neither of us knew about the other.

Bryann: So we were both there; we just never crossed paths. I still stayed for the whole game and then went home.

Rocky: I definitely got plenty to drink and got some food. I stayed till, like, halftime. [It] was too bad, because it was perfect; it would have been great [for a date].

Ed.: And thus our brilliant plan fizzled. But we still thought they had a shot, so we asked them to try again, this time in a more traditional Date Lab setting.

7:30 p.m., Capital Grille, Chevy Chase

Bryann: When I was getting ready, my roommate was helping me choose what to wear, and her boyfriend came in and said, “Oh, Rocky. I know a Rocky.” He texted [Rocky] and asked [him] if he was going on a blind date, and [Rocky] said, “Yeah, but I hope it’s not with you.”

Rocky: He was like, “I think I just dressed your date.” He said she was cute. I was excited. I got there probably around, like, 7:15. They took me to the table, and I just sat there and waited and hoped she showed up this time.

Bryann: I arrived at the restaurant probably a couple minutes after 7:30. He’s definitely very cute — well-dressed, had a nice smile. We shook hands, and I sat down.

Rocky: She’s blond, nice outfit, good-looking girl. I don’t know that I really have a type, but she’s a pretty girl, so, yeah, she’s my type. We ordered drinks first. We were able to laugh about missing the first [date].

Bryann: I actually had a picture on my phone, and then he pointed out where he was, and then we were like, “Oh, we were so close!” We probably narrowly missed each other. We grew up in sort of the same area, and we actually know some of the same people. The bars that we like to hang out in Bethesda are the same, as well.

Rocky: There was plenty to talk about. She grew up on a farm, so she likes to hunt and do a lot fo outdoor stuff, which I thought was cool.

Bryann: He was, I think, kind of nonchalantly trying to throw in some nice comments. They were really nice but pretty obvious. The waiter was saying something, and [Rocky] was like, “No, something for this pretty lady,” or something like that. It was cute. He was definitely a gentleman. He might be slightly shorter than someone I’m usually attracted to, but he definitely has a really good personality, which could outweigh that for me.

Rocky: I feel like she’s different than a lot of girls. I think there was some chemistry there for a first date.

Bryann: We both were sort of, like, joking around with each other but in a playful way. I think our sense of humor was very similar. There was conversation chemistry, but in terms of physical flirtation or touching, there wasn’t really any of that, other than when we were taking the picture.

Rocky: We got dessert. It was Monday, and it must have been 9:30 or 10.

Bryann: The bill came. [We] talked about hanging out on Friday for dinner or a movie or something. And then it was like, “Okay, let’s go.” We got each other’s numbers.

Rocky: I walked her out to the car and called it a night. We hugged. I’d probably [rate the date] a 4 [out of 5]. I’ll definitely contact her. She was a cool girl.

Bryann: Can I give it a 4.5? I wouldn’t say it was, like, an instant attraction. He’s a very attractive guy, but I would have to hang with him again, not on a blind date situation, to find out more.

Rocky and Bryann got together a few nights later. It was low-key, “but we had a good time,” Rocky says. Bryann thinks a third date is likely. Chance for romance? “I think I’d have to go out with him a little more and do something outside of just going to dinner, but there’s definitely a possibility,” she says.
