After three boys, the Clarks of Germantown had a daughter born with Down syndrome. Then they adopted two girls with the condition.
The Clark girls, from left, outside the family home in September: Emma, 7; Elizabeth, 8, adopted from Russia; and Abby, 4, adopted from China. Parents Jon and Nina Clark had three boys before Emma was born with Down syndrome in 2003. When Emma turned 4, Nina Clark began thinking the unthinkable: adopting a child just like Emma. The family adopted Abby in 2010 and Elizabeth this year. Rebecca Drobis/FOR THE WASHINGTON POST Buy Photo
