A day in the life of Hilda Staples

6:30 a.m.: Hilda Staples wakes up. She has a cup of coffee, scans the headlines in the newspaper and packs lunches for her 7-year-old twins, Jules and Beverly.

7:15 a.m.: Jules and Beverly wake up and get dressed.

7:30 to 7:45 a.m.: Staples drives the twins to their respective schools. Beverly’s school is closer to the house and starts earlier, so she gets dropped off first. The kids often eat breakfast in the car.

9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Staples goes to work at her office behind Family Meal, about a five-minute drive from her house. Every day is different, but she usually spends part of the day in her office and tries to stop in at the Frederick restaurants. One or two days a week she makes the hour-long drive into Washington to visit Graffiato and Range. Staples skips lunch most days because she gets so busy that she forgets to eat. By the time she remembers lunch, she said, it’s almost dinner time.

3:30 to 4 p.m.: The nanny picks up the twins

from school, takes them home and gets them started on their homework.

6 p.m.: Staples arrives home and starts preparing dinner. When she gets home late, the family goes out to dinner, often at Family Meal or Volt.

7 to 9 p.m.: The family eats dinner together. Most nights after dinner, particularly now that the weather is getting nicer, the kids play outside, either softball or Frisbee. Husband Jonathan is teaching Beverly and Jules to skateboard on the halfpipe he constructed in the back yard. The children recently discovered the “Brady Bunch” on television, so they like to watch that in the evenings.

9 p.m.: The twins take a bath and go to bed. Staples tries not to look at e-mails and messages on her phone; she likes to watch Bravo to unwind before falling asleep.
