Jan. 29, 1976 Assata Shakur, then also known as Joanne Chesimard and described as the "soul" of the Black Liberation Army, is led in handcuffs and leg irons from Rikers Island prison in New York to the Middlesex County jail to await trial in the killing of state trooper Werner Foerster.
