Thursday night’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, hosted by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, gave an early awards season boost to the year’s most talked about film, “The Artist.”
The black-and-white ode to the silent-film era directed by Michel Hazanavicius led winners with four honors at Thursday’s 17th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, reported the Associated Press:
“The Artist” took the top prize, best picture, as well as honors for best score, costume design and director.
“I made a silent movie,” French director Hazanavicius joked in English while accepting the award for best picture. “I don’t like to speak so much.”
“The Help,” an adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel about black maids speaking out about their white employers during the civil-rights movement, followed behind “The Artist” with three wins in the ceremony’s acting categories: Viola Davis as best actress, Octavia Spencer as best supporting actress and the film’s cast as best acting ensemble.
Celebritology’s Jen Chaney recapped the most memorable moments of the awards show, which she notes, heaped huge praise on “The Artist”:
After Wednesday’s People’s Choice Awards, the Critics’ Choice, which aired on VH1, was like a breath of fresh, movie-honoring air. And by that I mean: a few interesting things actually happened! Viola Davis gave the season’s first moving acceptance speech, prompting a clearly visible “wow” to escape Steven Spielberg’s lips; Fitz and the Tantrums proved to be a fine awards show house band; Judd Apatow said [bleep] you to Jerry Lewis; and George Clooney revealed some important facts involving himself and naugahyde apparel.
The blog also compared red carpet fashion at both awards shows, specifically the back-to-back green ensembles by “The Help” star, Emma Stone.
Stone clearly stepped things up considerably for the Critics’ Choice with this flowy Jason Wu-designed gown with a slight train. Very pretty, although, with so much length, one could argue that it’s a bit much for the event. I mean, one could. I won’t because I think she looks great.
So which Emma Stone green get-up is the winner? Is it even a contest?
