How do you pronounce ‘GIF’?
Steve Wilhite, the inventor of the Graphic Image File (GIF), sent a shock wave across the Internet Tuesday night by declaring the proper pronunciation of the file format he invented more than 25 years ago. According to Wilhite: “It’s pronounced “JIF” not “GIF” He delivered the news, via GIF of course, as part of his Webby Awards lifetime achievement acceptance speech. But, does that really give him the authority to settle this debate? Make your case, what’s the correct pronunciation of the word “GIF”?
