U Street Music Hall opened in March 2010 and quickly emerged as a home base for moombahton, a fusion of electronic dance music and reggaeton. Its monthly Moombahton Massive parties were huge hits, and, for the first time, Washington had produced a viral electronic music genre of its own. Then, one by one, the people who built it decamped to Los Angeles.
