Janza Pullen & Donnell Reese

Janza Pullen, 45, works for the IRS. Donnell Reese, 44, is a building engineer. They live in Silver Spring.

Wedding date: Jan. 15

Location: The Villa, Beltsville.

Guests: 75

How they met: In January 2010, Pullen was shopping at the Giant in Calverton when Reese offered to help carry her grocery bags to the car. She declined his offer, but when she got into her car and noticed he was still looking in her direction, she drove up beside him and struck up a conversation. They talked most of the day and proceeded to dinner.

The proposal: They were opening gifts in their pajamas on Christmas day 2010 when Reese got down on one knee and slipped a small box into her hand. Pullen wondered to herself, Don’t I need to go get dressed up for this?

The wedding: They chose to get married in January because it was the month they met and because both enjoy cold weather. Following an African tradition, Pullen and Reese took a sip of four flavors — sour (lemon), bitter (vinegar), hot (cayenne) and sweet (honey) — which the officiant explained represented the different emotions within a marriage. To create a winter wonderland, the room was draped in tulle and decorated with metallic trees with pink snowflakes.

The honeymoon: The couple headed off toVirginia Beach for a week to relax, walk on the beach and appreciate the peace of the area’s off-season.
