Wedding date: May 14

Location: Hotel Liaison, Capitol Hill

Guests: 150

How they met: The two caught each other’s eye at a networking event in September 2006. Sara left before Jay had a chance to introduce himself, so he looked her up on a roster of attendees. He had noticed just her first name on her name tag, but there was only one “Sara” on the list, and he asked her out by e-mail. Their first date was the following week at Mai Thai in Dupont Circle. “There was chemistry right away,” Jay says. After three months, they were seeing each other exclusively; a year later, they moved in together.

The proposal: Jay wanted to do something special for Sarah’s 30th birthday, which fell on the same day as his company’s holiday party. He treated her to spa appointments and small gifts throughout the day. Just before the party, he presented Sara with a scrapbook he had made about her life so far. The final page read: “How would you like to spend the rest of your life with me?”

The wedding: They chose a purple-and-green color scheme and arranged different types of lighting to create a “New York/Miami lounge vibe.” The menu featured twists on traditional Southern food, including chicken pot pie empanadas and Virginia ham with preserves. A group hug ended the reception, which was followed by an after-party at Eden.

The honeymoon: They spent a week in San Juan, Puerto Rico, relaxing on the beach and exploring the island. The couple enjoyed the food and dancing, along with their “fair share of rum,” says Jay.
