As part of her birthday celebrations, Queen Elizabeth II honored Angelina Jolie, Daniel Day-Lewis and others on her annual Birthday Honors List. These actors, politicians and businessmen will take on the title of “Sir” or “Dame” — the British citizens will, anyway — for their contributions to “services of national importance.” Here a few other recognizable faces who have been knighted over the years.
Angelina Jolie was made an honorary dame in recognition of her work to raise global awareness of violence against women and services to British foreign policy. (As a U.S. citizen, she’s not entitled to be called “Dame.”) Here, Jolie speaks at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict on June 13, 2014, in London.
