TV highlights: ‘The Americans’ finale; ‘Family Tools’ premieres

On the second anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death, HBO airs the documentary “Manhunt” (at 8 p.m.), and examines how the CIA tracked him down after years of searching; also, a look at the Sisterhood, a group of female analysts who were among the first officers to pinpoint the existence of al-Qaeda.

SERIES PREMIERE: It doesn’t appear that ABC has high hopes for comedy “Family Tools” (8:30), given that it’s premiering as the TV season is winding down. Kyle Bornheimer stars as a perpetual screw-up son who is called home to run the family handyman business after his father (J.K. Simmons) gets sick.

RETURNING SHOW: “Mythbusters” (Discovery at 9) resumes with new episodes by celebrating the show’s 10th anniversary — it debuted in January 2003. On Wednesday, hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman look back at the first myth tested: figuring out whether a rocket-propelled car could really take flight.

On the final installment of “Nova: Australia’s First 4 Billion Years” (WETA at 9), the series examines Australia-specific animals, such as the kangaroo, along with a look at the continent’s changing landscape.

SERIES PREMIERE: Actor Kal Penn, who recently served in the White House Office of Public Engagement, hosts new game show “The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius” (Discovery at 10). In the competition, 10 contestants must unscramble seemingly impossible engineering-themed challenges, beginning with figuring out how to stop two pickup trucks heading into a head-on collision.

FINALE WATCH: Spy drama “The Americans” (FX at 10) has been renewed for a second season, so what do you want to bet the finale ends on a suspenseful note? Anyway, Philip and Elizabeth are forced to go to a dangerous meeting, while Stan starts to close in on the couple.

RETURNING SHOW: A couple of musical artists join the cast when “R&B Divas: Atlanta” (TV One at 10) comes back for a second season, and the group welcomes LaTocha Scott (of ’90s R&B group Xscape) and soul singer Angie Stone.

Jolene tried to make out with her daughter’s boyfriend, Dante, last time on “Nashville” (ABC at 10), so it’s unlikely that Juliette will believe her when Jolene thinks that Dante’s being unfaithful.

“The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” (NBC at 11:35) hosts comedian Kathy Griffin, actor Eli Roth and a performance by Cheap Trick.

Actor Tobey Maguire and musical guest Tom Odell are on “Late Show With David Letterman” (CBS at 11:35).

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” (ABC at 11:35) has actor Pierce Brosnan, actress Greta Gerwig and singer Alice Russell.
