The first of two exhibits of the Armenian photographer’s work at the National Portrait Gallery includes images of Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemingway.
Winston Churchill Sir Winston Churchill by Yousuf Karsh, 1941. The legendary photograph is famous for its pure visual power as well as its historical impact, according to Post art critic Philip Kennicott. Karsh took the photo immediately after the prime minister delivered a speech to the Canadian parliament. Karsh also plucked a cigar from Churchill’s mouth, giving way to a scowl. “That pique read as defiance, and the image . . . helped define Churchill’s reputation as a pugnacious and heroic last bulwark against Hitler,” Kennicott writes.
