Outer Banks are back

Hurricane Irene came to the Outer Banks, but it did not conquer and destroy.

Last week, North Carolina highway officials reopened Route 12, which had been closed south of Nags Head due to severe storm damage. Access to Hatteras Island also means the return of ferry service to Ocracoke Island.

On the section between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe, workers have filled breaches with sand and built a temporary two-lane bridge. Despite the open road, be on alert for lowered speed limits and ongoing repairs.

Ferries from Ocracoke to Swan Quarter, Cedar Island and Hatteras will follow the fall schedule through Nov. 1, at which point the winter schedule takes over. Info: www.ncdot.org/ferry.
