Asbury Park, N.J., is about 200 miles from Washington. From Interstate 95 north, follow the New Jersey Turnpike to Route 195 east to Route 138 east. Take Route 18 north, then Route 66 east. Follow Asbury Avenue to 1200 Ocean Ave.

Recently opened community restaurant in an old auto body shop, run by the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation. Diners may pay what they can (minimum $10 donation recommended) or volunteer for their meal. A recent menu featured such entrees as cornmeal crusted catfish with beans and rice, and pork chops with fig and apple chutney.

Hands-on workshop, $95. Walk-up classes vary in price; for example, the ornament lesson costs $45. Classes available Friday 3-6 p.m., Saturday-Sunday noon-6 p.m. and by appointment. Gallery winter hours Thursday-Monday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Open daily in summer.
