Catherine Hannan, 33, is a plastic surgeon at the Washington, D.C., Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Matthew de Jesus, 37, is an anesthesiologist at Georgetown University Hospital. They live in Arlington.
Wedding date: April 28
Location: Four Seasons Hotel, Washington
How they met: In the fall of 2005, Hannan was a first-year surgical resident at Georgetown Hospital. She was working on a complicated case with the aid of
de Jesus, who consulted with her on chronic pain. After several weeks, they succeeded in helping the patient and Hannan suggested they celebrate with a beer at Rock Bottom Brewery in Ballston. Hannan soon learned that de Jesus’s patients adored him; she fell in love with his kindness and down-to-earth personality. Their first dinner date at Two Amys followed shortly after.
The proposal: After six years together, on a cold evening in January 2011, they headed to Two Amys. Hannan was not expecting a proposal until “in a very relaxed and nonchalant manner,” de Jesus took out a box and put a ring on her finger. When they got up from the table, the other diners started applauding.
The wedding: The priest from Hannan’s childhood church presided over the ceremony, which included a performance by her friends from the choir at Holy Trinity of Northwest Washington. Local cover band Gonzo’s Nose performed at the reception and Hannan joined them to sing Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory.” Treats from Georgetown Cupcake were offered to guests.
The honeymoon: They traveled to the Maldives, where they stayed at the W Retreat and Spa in a unit with its own private pool. They snorkeled, ate lots of sushi and sampled exotic fruits, including mangosteen.
