Lia Glavin, 30, is assistant director of college counseling at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. John Prugh, also 30, is a business analyst at System Sciences Corporation International, an IT consulting firm based in Chevy Chase. They live in Ballston.
Wedding date: Dec. 31, 2012
Location: Fauquier Springs Country Club, Warrenton
How they met: Glavin and Prugh connected through eHarmony. After a month of e-mails and phone conversations, they met for a first date at Firefly in the District in January 2011 and spent three hours talking over dinner. They saw each other seven or eight times that first month. “Every date felt comfortable,” Glavin said.
The proposal: In June, while Glavin was packing her D.C. apartment to move to Arlington County, Prugh called to say he was outside and had brought boxes to help. When Glavin went to the doorstep, Prugh gave her a box. Inside were cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes, topped with candied engagement rings. As Glavin realized what was happening, Prugh dropped to one knee and proposed.
The wedding: They chose New Year’s Eve because “they wanted to ring in 2013 as a married couple surrounded by family and friends,” Glavin said. Glittery noisemakers and custom-printed napkins with champagne flutes made festive decorations. Because Glavin and Prugh are redheads, each table featured a photo of a famous carrot-top, including Lucille Ball and Henry VIII. A dance instructor had choreographed lifts and dips into their first dance, to Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon.” After the countdown to midnight, guests went outside and lit sparklers to usher the couple out of the reception.
The honeymoon: They spent a few days at Disney World after the wedding and are planning a vacation in Greece and Turkey this summer.
