16-year-old fatally shot in Fairfax County

A 16-year-old was found fatally shot early Sunday outside a hotel in the Vienna area, Fairfax County police said.

Gerard Gomez, of the Mount Vernon area, was found about 2 a.m. on a sidewalk next to the Residence Inn Tysons Corner on Westwood Center Drive, police said. He had injuries to the upper body. Officers tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The hotel is near the crossing of Dulles Toll Road and Leesburg Pike.

Officer Shelley Broderick, a police spokeswoman, said the investigation is in its early stages.

Mount Vernon High School Principal Nardos King said Gomez was a junior at the school. In a message to parents and school staff, King wrote that counselors and crisis responders would be available to students and faculty at the school on Monday.

“Gerard was very well liked by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed,” King wrote. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Police asked anyone with information to contact Crime Solvers. Tipsters can call 1-866-411-8477; submit information through; or text CRIMES/274637, starting a message with the phrase “TIP187.” They can also call police at 703-691-2131.
