2 small planes make emergency landings

Two single-engine airplanes made emergency landings within 100 miles of Washington on Monday. One came down in a parking lot in Spotsylvania County, Va., and the other landed in a field and taxied along a traffic-clogged road in Delaware, police said.

No injuries were reported.

In Virginia, state police said a lack of fuel forced a Piper to come down about 5:45 a.m. near the WaWa store on Shannon Park Drive, near the Shannon Airport. Police said Jerome M. Orlando, 33, of Broadway, Va., had been flying from Tampa to Charlottesville.

In Delaware, state police said a Cessna carrying a pilot and an instructor landed near Dover Air Force Base about 5:25 p.m., went through a fence and onto Bay Road but that it stopped in a median without hitting cars.
