A 2-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet and critically wounded Saturday night at an apartment complex in Prince George’s County, the police said.

The child was taken to a hospital after the shooting in the Glenarden/Landover area. Police said he had been struck in the upper body.

The incident occurred about 9:15 p.m. in the 3000 block of Brightseat Road. It was not clear from first accounts whether the child lived there.

Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a county police spokesman, said it appeared that someone had been firing in a parking lot.

It was not believed that there was any intention to shoot at the child, who was playing outdoors when he was hit, Rodriguez said.

“It looks like someone unknown was shooting,” Rodriguez said. It “doesn’t look like he (the boy) was targeted.”

Police said late Saturday that they were conducting a preliminary investigation and had no suspects..

The area, about two miles north of FedEx Field, includes garden-style apartments on tree-shaded grounds.
