Teacher charged in sex abuse case

A Montgomery County middle school teacher was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexual abuse in a case involving three female students.

Two 11-year-old girls told detectives that Benjamin Robert Cano, a teacher at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School for the Creative and Performing Arts, touched them inappropriately during school hours in the past academic year, police said.

A school administrator received a report May 16 that Cano had interacted inappropriately with two students, according to schools spokesman Dana Tofig.

The school immediately suspended Cano and contacted police the next day, Tofig said.

Police said they met with the two girls, who told detectives that Cano had also touched a third child.

Cano, 33, of Edgewater, was charged with three counts of sexual abuse of a minor and three counts of third-degree sex offenses. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

Cano has worked at the middle school for two years, Tofig said.
