Police identify man fatally shot in SE

One of two people fatally shot within 14 minutes of each other Monday night in Southeast Washington has been identified as a 40-year-old D.C. man, police said Wednesday.

Ronnell Daniels of Southeast Washington was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the 11:15 p.m. shooting in the first block of 55th Street SE.

Daniels had been shot several times and was found near East Capitol Street.

Less than 15 minutes after Daniels was shot, police responded to the 2600 block of Bowen Road SE, where they found Antwone Dwayne Tolson, 19, of Southeast Washington suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said Wednesday that they do not think the shootings were related.

Transit Center woes cited in Montgomery

The Silver Spring Transit Center is plagued by design, construction and management failures, some of which were known as early as 2010, the Montgomery County Inspector General’s Office reported Tuesday.

The 64-page document adds to a burgeoning library of research on the $120 million bus and train hub, which was originally supposed to open in mid-2011. It illustrates how the transit center, envisioned as a key component in downtown Silver Spring’s rebirth, was plagued from the start: by unexpected underground obstacles at the site, questionable oversight of cement quality, pouring and hardening of concrete in winter temperatures below established limits, and structural steel supports that never made it into certain segments of the road.

Plans are underway for repairs to roads and concrete beams and girders, work expected to push the eventual opening of the facility into 2015.

Man accused of fatally stabbing acquaintance

A 20-year-old Centreville man has been charged with murder in the stabbing of a neighborhood acquaintance over the weekend following an altercation, Fairfax County police said.

Sebastian Velasco Santiago of the 14400 block of Golden Oak Road was arrested Wednesday in the killing of Domingo Eduardo Santiago Cuchil, 20, of no fixed address in Centreville.

Police declined to discuss what led to the altercation or a motive for the slaying but said Cuchil was found lying on the sidewalk in the 14400 block of Golden Oak Road about 11 p.m. Saturday.
