Suspect had frequented Alexandria restaurant since early April, employee says

Jamie Craig, bar manager at Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray, said James Hodgkinson had been coming to the restaurant on and off for months.

He preferred to drink Budweiser in the can, she said, and sometimes mocked craft beers as too fancy. She said he liked to watch golf on TV and was in town at least as early as April 6, when he came to the bar to watch the Masters.

“All the bartenders here have served him,” she said. “Each and every one of us described him as kind of creepy and not a friendly person.”

Police have identified Hodgkinson as the shooter who opened fire on Republican lawmakers and staffers as they attended baseball practice Wednesday morning. She added, “I remember him staring a lot when I served him — like, at me, and then he would be staring outside a lot.”

Craig said that while Hodgkinson seemed strange, he was not unkempt. “He just seemed like the average working-class kind of guy,” she said. “He didn’t look disheveled.”

She said that to her knowledge, he never spoke about his political views, his personal life or why he was in Alexandria.
