Virginia couple Stephanie and Desiree Bryan, married in the District, plan their daughters’ birth in D.C. two hours from home so both can be legally recognized as parents.
Married couple Stephanie, left, and Desiree Bryan welcome their twin daughters, Mia Lynn and Lily Mae, at Sibley Hospital in Washington on May 16, 2014. The couple lives in Midlothian, Va., but they chose to have their daughters delivered in the District, a two-hour drive from home, friends and family, but the surest way for their daughters to have two mothers in the eyes of the law. Virginia does not recognize either their 2010 marriage in the District or Stephanie’s parentage of the girls, who grew from her fertilized eggs implanted and carried by Desiree.
