In 1943, Earl Baker, a gunner on a B-17 bomber, took part in the historic raid on a factory complex in Schweinfurt, Germany, a mission that resulted in heavy losses in U.S. planes and crew members. Baker, a Roanoke area resident, enjoyed a recent ride on a restored B-17, but many of the memories were not happy ones.
