Three months after giving birth, Pat Hawkins was struck in the head by a random bullet. As she was recovering, she walked out of her mother’s home in California. She returned nine years later, but then disappeared again. It would be many years, and more health setbacks, before she would see her family again, reunited with a second cousin thanks to a nurse at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Dec. 28, 2012 Pat Hawkins, left, at the moment she was reunited with her second cousin Diane Holmes, who came to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the District from California to take her home. Holmes told Hawkins, "You're going to go home, my darling." The pair had not seen each other in 16 years. Michael S. Williamson/The Washington Post Buy Photo
