An Alexandria man was killed late Friday when the car he was driving veered off Interstate-95 in Fairfax County and was struck by another car in a three-vehicle collision that shut down southbound lanes of the highway.

Close to midnight Friday, Virginia State Police said, a Mazda struck a traffic barrier on the right side of the interstate near the exit ramp to Backlick Road. The car overturned, rolling back into southbound traffic and striking a Ford Focus, which was then hit by a tractor-trailer.

Police identified the driver of the Mazda as Ryan Cox, 23, who died at the scene. He was the only person in the car.

The driver and two passengers in the Ford and the driver of the tractor-trailer were not injured, according to police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Southbound lanes of I-95 had reopened by 4:40 a.m. Saturday. The cause of the crash is still being investigated, Geller said.
