Arlington cab driver named ‘taxi driver of the year’ by national organization

A Washington area cabbie has been chosen as “taxi driver of the year” by a national organization.

Jerome Green, a driver for Arlington’s Red Top Cab service, will receive his commendation at the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association’s convention this month.

Green, an Arlington native, has been a Red Top cab driver since 1987 and was chosen for his driving record and community service.

According to Red Top, Green provides free transportation to children in an early morning tutoring program at the Arlington Science Focus School.

Green is also credited with saving the life of a regular customer, an 93-year-old woman.

“When she didn’t call, he went to her home to check on her,” according to a news release from Red Top. “Getting no response from knocking on the door, he called for emergency assistance. When they entered the home, the senior was found lying on the floor, where she had been for over 24 hours, unable to get help. Later, when Jerome went to visit her at the hospital, she thanked him and then asked, ‘What took you so long?’ ”

According to Red Top, several Arlington residents sent recommendation letters on Green’s behalf to the TLPA, which represents more than 80,000 cab drivers nationwide.

Red Top Cab’s president, Neal Nichols, said Green’s selection “is quite a testimony to his character, his commitment to excellence, and his contributions to our community.”
