Repairs are expected to begin this week to a five-to-six-foot deep sinkhole that opened up in Arlington National Cemetery and has closed a portion of Ord and Weitzel Drive, near Section 27.

The sinkhole was the result of “an old culvert that failed under the roadway. . . there was no damage to any surrounding graves, headstones, or trees,” said Melissa Bohan of Arlington’s public affairs office.

The sinkhole, which is about four- to five-feet in diameter and was discovered May 30, is expected to be repaired by mid-August.
